'I couldn't see the sea from my bedroom but I could hear the waves breaking in the distance.
They reminded me that I was on a tiny island. And I was trapped.'

There has never been a murder on Alderney.

It's a tiny island, just three miles long and a mile and a half wide. The perfect location for a brand-new literary festival. Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne has been invited to talk about his new book. The writer, Anthony Horowitz, travels with him.

Very soon they discover that all is not as it should be. Alderney is in turmoil over a planned power line that will cut through it, desecrating a war cemetery and turning neighbour against neighbour.

The visiting authors - including a blind medium, a French performance poet and a celebrity chef - seem to be harbouring any number of unpleasant secrets.

When the festival's wealthy sponsor is found brutally killed, Alderney goes into lockdown and Hawthorne knows that he doesn't have to look too far for suspects.

There's no escape. The killer is still on the island. And there's about to be a second death...

by the master of modern British crime fiction. As a reader, you only realise at the end of the book, how intricate, intelligent and sophisticated his plots are. Anthony Horowitz is a master in everything he touches.

Another brilliant read…

Ein Fehler ist aufgetreten. Bitte versuche es in ein paar Minuten noch einmal.

In the beginning I was getting slightly annoyed by the self conscious author or rather the way he belittled himself again and again. But after seriously considering not to continue listening, I simply decided to not like Horowitz (as the protagonist, not the real author, that is) very much. After that decision I enjoyed the story enormously. Wicked twists, wicked people, everyone carries a secret they don’t want to get revealed - A line to kill has everything that a classic who done it could ask for. I am glad to have found Horowitz and add him to my not so very broad list of crime authors that really have it all. He is a worthy heir of the one and only AC.

Also, the story telling was extremely well done. Kinnear gives every single character an individual touch, which makes it easy to follow the story. I often find this the biggest challenge in listening to books, but he does an incredible job. Great voice, great acting.

So yeah, I recommend it strongly, even though it’s hard to switch off and you might want to cancel your night out with friends in order to get the book finished. Be warned.

Catching Story

boring is really the best only way to describe this book. Both main characters are extremely unlikeable. I didn't even finish listening to it
