Über diesen Titel
It is difficult to find another soldier's story to equal Captain Darrell Watt's in terms of time spent on the field of battle and challenges faced. Even by the lofty standards of the SAS and Special Forces, one has to look far to find anyone who can match his record of resilience and valor in the face of such daunting odds and with resources so paltry.
In the fight, he showed himself to be a military maestro. A bush-lore genius, blessed with uncanny instincts and an unbridled determination to close with the enemy, he had no peers as a combat-tracker (and there was plenty of competition). But the Rhodesian theater was a fluid and volatile one in which he performed in almost every imaginable fighting role.
After 12 years in the cauldron of war, his cause slipped from beneath him, and Rhodesia gave way to Zimbabwe. When the guns went quiet, Watt had won all his battles but lost the war. In this fascinating biography, we learn that in his twilight years, he is now concerned with saving wildlife on a continent where they are in continued danger and devoting himself to both the fauna and African people he cares so deeply about.

Interesting
It was my second book by the author, Wessels. If listened to first, I might have liked it better.
The story was good but seemed a bit confused at times, events being told without context.
Altogether the insight given is fascinating and never boring.
It showed me how the colonial perspective and felt guilt of Europeans that did so much wrong in Rhodesia - where apparently some black factions were racist - works. The same perspective is still used on current situations … like Israel.

Great book destroyed by a nightmare of a reader
When dealing with Rhodesia the publishers should have had the brains to choose a reader who is at least the tiniest bit familiar with the english (not american!) language and knows how to pronounce "Rhodesia" or "Nkomo" or "Salisbury". On top of it Jack Chekijan speaks as if he wants to put a toddler to sleep. Not at all a voice to thrill one with a wartime story. Its an outright noucance to listen to this guy reading a story which is anything but boring.
But still - buy it. The story and the legacy behind it alone is worth enduring this voice.

A war diary with an inconvenient history lesson
First of all I have to say this was a thrilling book about the most daring and courageous men imaginable. They fought for the country their fathers built and they knew they were about to loose everything.
Apart from that I was even more stunned by the history of Rhodesia and how the West willingly handed over its colonies to the communists. I simply could not believe how the SAS had the most losses of all British platoons in WW2 and only and 20 years later the motherland sold them out to black communists. This is one of the books that makes you realise what a farce the cold war really was and how little the world cared that white settlers were slaughtered in Africa.
In contrast to some other comments I have to say that the speaker has done a great job. I think his tone is very much appropriate for a war story like this.
