Über diesen Titel
When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes.
Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must.
And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.
Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry. Amelia is more likely to be found on the other side of a police line-up. And yet she is in the academy. A protégée of the murdered professor.
The focus of the investigation soon turns to Gamache himself and his mysterious relationship with Amelia, and his possible involvement in the crime. The frantic search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a stained glass window with its own horrific secrets.
For both Amelia Choquet and Armand Gamache, the time has come for a great reckoning.

“If you haven't listened to this series, start at once. You'll love your stay in Three Pines.”--AudioFile, Earphones Awards Winner
"This book engages the listener immediately and might be Penny’s best one yet...The narration is dramatic and voiced. [Robert] Bathurst has clearly found a comfort level with the characters that is obvious from the many different voices he utilizes to reflect each one’s idiosyncrasies. Reading at a good pace and tempo, the complex story unfolds and eventually all the mysteries are resolved, including one that is revealed in the very last pages. Fans of the series will gobble this up and relish every moment." SoundCommentary.com
"Bathurst is nothing short of perfect, managing the French-Canadian accents deliciously." - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Can't wait for the next one.
I wish there were more Three Pines, more of it's villagers and I could live there.

Great story, disappointing speaker
Robert Bathurst mispronounces all the names. He shouts when the characters speak quietly or in a hushed voice. Very annoying!

Murder, Friendship and Atonement
This book makes you feel good. It is not just the protagonist and his bone deep honesty, it is the charm of the little village of Three Pines. We all would love to live in a closely knit community like that, where neighbors are real friends and friends are perhaps peculiar and bizarre, but real friends. This is the book to cure the depression of dark winter nights. Curl up in front of the fire place, sip a hot chocolate and let Louise Penny take you to Three Pines. You will fall in love with Reine-Marie, Jean Guy, Isabelle and all of the residents.
This is not a straight forward crime story, it is a fabric of seemingly independent strings of events, past and present, which create the incredibly tense and mesmerizing atmosphere of the book.
An artfully painted old map is found in the walls of the bistro in three pines and its secrets and hidden meaning become more mysterious by the day. At the same time Armand Gamache, the former Chief of Homicide of the Sûreté du Québec, starts his new job at the Police Academy, where he wants to root out for good the evil and corruption seeded by his predecessors. But there is also Amelia Choquet, an unlikely young cadet with all her tattoos and piercings and her secret past. Somehow there is a hidden link between her and Gamache and Gamache is unwilling to talk about it. And then there is murder. A professor of the academy is shot in his room with his own weapon. The investigation reveals that the victim is not an innocent teacher, but a vile and criminal creature and this makes Gamache a suspect as well.
It is a powerful story with incredibly authentic characters. There is friendship and affection, but also sick ambition and cruelty, but overall it is a strong statement for the essence of good in people.
