Ken Follett is a masterful storyteller and he knows very well, how to spice historical facts with moving tales of love and hate, friendship and deceit and the everlasting struggle for a meaningful and fulfilled life. If you are a fan of “the Pillars of the Earth”, I have to disappoint you. “Column of Fire” is not a real sequel to the Kingsbridge saga. It is not even a medieval story, it rather describes the dawn of modern history. You will be taken to Kingsbridge now and then, but it is not significant to the events in the story.
“Column of Fire” is the story of Ned Willard, an honest merchant in Kingsbridge, who lost most of the family’s fortune due to the criminal manipulations of his competitor Rollo Fitzgerald. Unfortunately Ned is hopelessly in love with Rollo’s sister Margery, but she is supposed to marry into a noble house. As a consequence, Ned devotes his life to Elisabeth, the young queen of England. He becomes her secret agent, working endlessly on protecting her from assassination plots, rebellions and invasion plans.
It is a fascinating book, a real Ken Follett and yes, it has some flaws. Characters are black and white and the prose, especially the dialogues, sounds very 20th century like sometimes. But of course, this does not diminish the overall merit of the book.

Da Kingsbridge nur am Rande auftaucht, ist die Werbung als "Kingsbridge Novel" etwas weit hergeholt. Trotzdem wieder ein langer historischer Roman von Ken Follett dem man gerne stundenlang folgt. Dazu trägt auch der bekannte Sprecher bei.
