Über diesen Titel
I’m not sure what I was thinking that day.
It was a normal Thursday, nothing new or exciting had occurred in the morning.
I’d risen from bed, taken a shower and brushed my teeth. I’d then jumped on the 8:05 bus that ran a short distance between my house and the county library where I worked.
The ride took its usual 15 minutes before it left me standing fresh-faced in front of a building of gothic construction that was my favorite place in the world.
After straightening my knee-length skirt, I pushed open the door that led into the interior of the library.
It was at that moment that my world would change—impossibly and forever. It was a fateful movement of wood that collided with the shoulder of a man that would alter my very existence.
It wasn’t fear that I felt at that moment—more like the feeling of being watched. It was the feeling of knowing that danger lurks—the sensation of the hair standing on end at the back of your neck.
Looking back on a moment that happened so many months ago, I now realize that I should have listened to that feeling.
As I would later find out, the man standing in front of me referred to himself as Master Lucas…
…and I was his next target.

Expectations -> Thrown out the Window
I initially had very few expectations for this book - well, beyond the trigger warnings. While I am an avid romance reader, dark romance was not a genre I had had the time to explore before.
To say the least, any trigger warnings should be taken seriously - some parts of this book I found incredibly hard to listen to - I made the grave mistake of listening to one of the truly darker chapters in the dead of night, in darkness. Now THAT was the stuff of nightmares.
However, I found the writing of this book to turn out far cleverer than I expected or initially gave it credit for! The author spins a brilliant tale of did he, did he not? As soon as I was sure i knew what was happening in the grand scheme of the narrative, another half-sentence threw me for a loop - multiple times. I as a reader was similarly played as the main character Autumn was.
In fact, the epilogue, after having had an explanation for pretty much every turn of the book, gives the reader yet another whiplash - hell, maybe even two? That one in particular I'm not sure if I find believable, but it sure is unexpected. I have yet to decide whether I find the last few minutes of the book to be unsatisfactory or entirely brilliant - (SPOILER INCOMING) as a romance reader I'd like to shout, PLEASE do not ruin Adam Marx for me! NOT AGAIN!
Both narrators of this well-produced audiobook do an exceptional job at making the characters believable in their emotions and intentions. Ada Sinclair's lovely voice manages to bring across both a scared as well as turned-on Autumn - sometimes all at once. Orcus Auditory's seductive timbre excells at the switch between icy cold, brilliant warmth and bone-chilling growls that makes Lucas what he is - an irresistible enigma until the very end.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm sure even knowing the twists and turns won't stop me from re-listening in the future - but maybe out in safe, sunshine weather. ;)
