Inhaltsangabe
An inspiring anthem to the power, promise and challenges of self-control, the second in a series examining the timeless Stoic virtues from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ryan Holiday.
The inscription on the Oracle of Delphi says: 'Nothing in excess.' C.S. Lewis described temperance as going to the 'right length but no further.' Easy to say, hard to practice—and if it was tough in 300 BCE, or in the 1940s, it feels all but impossible today. Yet it's the most empowering and important virtue any of us can learn.
Drawing on ancient Stoic wisdom and examples across history and around the world, Ryan Holiday shows why self-control is so vital, and how to cultivate it in our own lives. Moderation is not about abstinence: it is about creativity, self-respect, focus and balance. Without it, even the most positive traits become vices. But with it, happiness and success are assured: it is the only way to live an extraordinary, fulfilled and effective life.

Balanced and holistic insight into discipline
Great use of anecdotes to share and explore concepts surrounding the term discipline. Highlights the importance of temperance - not to slide into one extreme (no control) or the other (overly rigid discipline).
Highly recommend it.

A good book.
A good book overall, but it's hard to listen to something like this from a random dude.
And author should really get his facts straight. Especially the Germany and migrants... Come on now, look up the real state of things before praising somebody .

Inspirational.
I’ve now read all of Ryan‘s titles and just like all a the others, this didn’t disappoint. Stoicism is like Ryan suggests, the antidote to the difficulties and challenges modern life throws at us, Excellent book, thanks.

Sometimes. It’s not great as previous books. He didn’t add anything new
The structure was low. He was just summarizing what he read but not so much from his own experience

Toxic and redundant
The book begins with the glorification of the figure of Lou Gehrig, a dedicated and hardworking baseball player renowned for his willingness to play through illness and even with broken fingers. However, his disregard for his own well-being ultimately resulted in his premature death at the age of 37.
In contrast to this portrayal, Gabor Mate, a renowned psychologist, views Lou Gehrig as an example of pathological behavior. Mate highlights the detrimental effects of Gehrig's obsession with pushing himself beyond reasonable limits, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing one's health.
Furthermore, the author espouses certain toxic concepts, such as an unwavering focus on waking up early, which has been thoroughly debunked. It is well-established that individuals have different chronotypes, and one's preference for waking up early or late does not determine their level of laziness or productivity.
Moreover, the book frequently incorporates well-known ideas, like the notion of "cleaning your room," albeit repackaged as "cleaning your desk." This repetitiveness renders the book somewhat redundant, suggesting that its main objective may have been to amalgamate popular concepts in order to generate profit.
